\"PratchettPinUp\"<\/a>It\u2019s funny sometimes, how my two lives \u2013 that is to say, personal and professional \u2013 which I try to keep very distinct from each other, blend in odd clashing and unexpected ways.<\/p>\n

Right now, it\u2019s book club.<\/p>\n

Now, me and book club have had an odd relationship over the years \u2013 some of the books I\u2019ve been assigned to run club on I detest (Gardens of Water<\/i> most evil book ever ever written, and I was saddled with a bunch of old biddies who loved it and thought I was \u201ctoo young\u201d to understand it when in fact I understood parts of it better than they ever could\u2026but that\u2019s beside the point). But over the seasons I\u2019ve found myself actually looking forward to book club, especially when I run it here –\u00a0 somehow the groups I get on the flagship are more\u2026I don\u2019t know, open minded isn\u2019t quite the right word, but it\u2019s the one I can come up with.<\/p>\n

Anyway, right now we\u2019re reading The Girl With No Shadow<\/i>, which was actually my personal choice \u2013 I\u2019ve been trying to get Head Office to let me run it for ages, but as it\u2019s not itinerary related it was a tough sell, it was only this season I could pull it off. The thing is The Girl With No Shadow<\/i> is, at its heart, about identity, and how we form the image we present to other people, and how easily that image can be changed or mutated or even stolen by another. But beyond that\u2026it\u2019s about magic. Real magic, not the Harry Potter kind, but straight up kitchen magic, and cantrips and horse-shoes above the door.<\/p>\n

I can hear some of you smirking from here\u2026and I answer the question you\u2019re not asking: I\u2019m behaving myself\u2026but behind the mask of the civilized little librarian\u2026there might<\/i> just be a little trace of a knowing smile\u2026<\/p>\n
