\"SailorGirl_preview\"<\/a>In this sometimes very odd job of mine, you sometimes get to do very unexpected things. You are also occasionally required<\/em> to do very unexpected things. For example: we are currently undergoing the training necessary to switch the fleet\u2019s current \u201c2 alarm\u201d system to the new \u201c3 alarm\u201d system, which means the entire entertainment department is switching emergency functions. Mostly the training takes place in the classroom, a whole lot of theory and such. But there is<\/em> a practical element to it.<\/p>\n

Long and the short of it? I had to drive a lifeboat.<\/p>\n

Yup.<\/p>\n

Me.<\/p>\n

Had to drive a lifeboat.<\/p>\n

This was made more intimidating by the fact that I do not have my driver\u2019s liscence<\/em>. I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve sat behind the wheel of a moving vehicle since I was about 18 or so. I am utterly terrified of driving. I\u2019ve been told I\u2019m also terrifying while<\/em> driving, but it\u2019s been so long since I attempted it I wouldn\u2019t be sure of that. My supervisor\u2019s reaction to piece of information was really quite priceless.<\/p>\n

I have to go drive a lifeboat\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n

Oh right! Go you! Just don\u2019t hit the big tall thing floating in the water, we\u2019ll feel it if you do that.<\/em><\/p>\n

No promises\u2026I mean\u2026I don\u2019t even have a driver\u2019s licence<\/em><\/p>\n

SHUT THE FRONT DOOR you don\u2019t DRIVE?<\/em><\/p>\n

Nope..<\/em><\/p>\n

Oh\u2026dear<\/em><\/p>\n

In all honesty, it wasn\u2019t that<\/em> bad, it was only mildly terrifying. But there was someone hovering over us who actually knew what he was doing in case we did something drastically wrong, and we were really only steering. A lifeboat has surprisingly sensitive steering, you touch the wheel and she swings wide. Our trainer kept telling us that we had to treat her like a lady, meaning she has to be handled very gently or she won\u2019t do what you want her to.<\/p>\n
