Truth is, we are not<\/em> supposed to dance with the dance hosts. I mean we\u2019re really not, they are there to dance with the passengers, and to keep the guests entertained the same as we are. I am usually #1 in respecting this rule. A dance host asks me to dance, I will \u2013 usually \u2013 say no.<\/p>\n

But then…there are the few times when I don\u2019t realize who I am dancing with.<\/p>\n

We just started a 42 day cruise, no one knows anyone yet. We haven\u2019t even had<\/em> dance hosts so far this season, they are only brought on for the long cruises. And usually, they come in a certain pattern: there are a small number of solo gentleman who\u2019s are hired specifically to dance with the ladies on board, and there is usually a pair<\/em> of older professional dancers who are hired to head up that program and to dance with each other as simple demos etc.<\/p>\n

Thing is, they didn\u2019t send us a pair. They sent us one<\/em>. And he\u2019s young ,and he\u2019s \u2026really really<\/em> good.<\/p>\n

I swear, I swear to goddess I didn\u2019t know who I was dancing with. He was just a guy who said he could lead swing, who asked me to dance.<\/p>\n

So you default to triple steps then<\/em><\/p>\n

Er\u2026yeah<\/em><\/p>\n

Here, try it this way<\/em><\/p>\n

And suddenly, I\u2019m moving<\/em>, like not thinking about my feet, doing things I thought I\u2019d forgotten how to do<\/em>. I haven\u2019t danced like this in at least four years, if ever. And the whole room disappears, and to hell with the fact that I now realise that this<\/em> must be the<\/em> ballroom host who\u2019s onboard \u2013 whom our EM pretty much warned us was supposed to be off limits. Because this guy\u2026can lead like almost no one I have ever danced with before. And there\u2019s that magic split second where the lead you\u2019re dancing with realizes that yes, he is in fact dancing with a dancer, not just someone who thinks she is \u2013 and your feet leave the ground. And this isn\u2019t an uncontrolled \u201cI\u2019m picking you up because I think I know how\u201d this is a \u201c\u201dyou clearly know how to do this\u201d, arms up feet back figure skate aerial.<\/p>\n

You know the backflip<\/em>?<\/p>\n

The one where you go over the arm? Yes, but it\u2019s been a long time since I\u2019ve done it properly<\/em><\/p>\n

That a real skirt? <\/em><\/p>\n

Nope<\/em><\/p>\n

Okay\u2026trust me<\/em><\/p>\n

And, while still dancing (and this is a fast song keep in mind), he calls over to the actual cast dancer who is watching from the sidelines \u201cKal, watch this!\u201d<\/p>\n

And it turns out I do<\/em> know how to land that aerial without stumbling after all.<\/p>\n

So I return, somewhat breathing heavier than I intended, to the table, and my glass of wine \u2013 over which my supervisor is watching me suspiciously, and I grin somewhat sheepishly \u2013 and one of the others at the tables pipes up with<\/p>\n

Are you sure you\u2019re not a dancer?<\/em><\/p>\n

To which the cast member responds:<\/p>\n

No she IS, she totally is<\/em><\/p>\n

I just never get to dance. <\/em><\/p>\n

And the chances that it\u2019ll happen again are slim, this entire thing did lead into a big discussion about whom was allowed to dance with whom (and no worries, no one is in trouble! Supervisor even said I was allowed to dance with him, that she wasn\u2019t really sure what to even do<\/em> with him since he was here without a a partner which was going to make things challenging \u2013 but that I had to be\u2026careful\u2026 which is fair \u2013 he has a job to do, I have a job to do, and when do I ever go out anyway??)<\/p>\n

But just for one shiney shiney?<\/p>\n

I totally<\/em> got to fly.<\/p>\n
