Operation survive ship-board valentine\u2019s day is once again a go\u2026<\/p>\n

Actually, Valentine\u2019s Day has treated me exceptionally \u2013 surprisingly \u2013 well this year. Despite my love\/hate relationship with the \u201cday before cheap chocolate\u201d. Simple terms: I got spoiled, really<\/em> spoiled.<\/p>\n

I was rather stunned when one guest handed me a pound bag of Lindt chocolates (the good<\/em> kind\u2026the\u2026I\u2019d-better-just-forget-I-have-these-or-I-will-gain-ten-pounds-and-possibly-become-diabietic-kind), and another handed me a box of See\u2019s chocolates (which I know the guests were given in their rooms as a Valetine\u2019s gift, but that totally not the point). Between that, the two boxes of mint thins I picked up at the store yesterday, and the various films I have in the queue (I believe I have a date with a dashing english poet this evening)\u2026I suspect I\u2019m going to sail through this year with relatively few bumps and bruises.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve said before that this is an odd day on the ship, and it is. There are a lot of emotions to be sensitive to, so for the most part we\u2019ve kept it very low key. Although there are hearts everywhere<\/em>, and for those that are interested in flowers and chocolates and such there are certainly plenty of chances to aquire them!<\/p>\n

We\u2019ll have the Valentine\u2019s Day Ball this evening, and just before dinner the team assembled to drape everything that could be seen in swathes of red and glimmering hearts as far as the eye can see (although they\u2019ve done away with the fanci-fetti, which I already miss, because despite the fact that it got everywhere<\/em> it did produce a magical effect under the lights).<\/p>\n

For the first time this season I dug out the Whiplash Special (yes, that<\/em>, dress) and wrestled my now nearly-overly-long locks into something resembling an elegent up-do (I\u2019m usually tempted to just leave my hair down, but I can always hear Mum\u2019s voice in my head\u2026) and eased my aching feet into the dorothy specials \u2013 fire engine red spike heels that would do put any pair of ruby slippers to shame.<\/p>\n

Apparently when I went past the photography studio the photog on duty had no idea who I was. Ran into a friend of mine at the ball later in the evening who raised her glass to me and said,<\/p>\n

You realize that Clicks had no idea who you were<\/em><\/p>\n

Huh? Seriously?<\/em><\/p>\n

Seriously.Totally thought you were a guest\u2026why do you think he took so many shots?<\/em><\/p>\n

I did\u2026kind of wonder<\/em><\/p>\n

Yeah, and then you walked away and he was like \u2018who was that\u2019 and everyone around him went\u2026\u2019you don\u2019t know who that was? Really? That was Shaughnessy\u2026you know\u2026the Librarian\u2026works down the hall\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

I laughed. Apparently I was in disguise without even knowing it.<\/p>\n
