The air feels strange tonight, I don\u2019t know why. I can\u2019t place it, can\u2019t catch it, can\u2019t figure it out. It\u2019s as if the happy go-lucky atmosphere in the room \u2013 all blaring bass and slamming keyboards \u2013 is floating on something else; and the water, or whatever it is doing the supporting, is electrified. It\u2019s making my nerves stand on edge.<\/p>\n
Dammit it\u2019s September. It\u2019s never this early. They\u2019re<\/em> never this early. Except when it is, except when they are.<\/p>\n Stay away, stay at arm\u2019s length. \u00a0Do not be offended if I seem to put<\/em> you there. It is not personal, it is protection. Your protection. I am a radio antennae, I am an ungrounded lightening rod.<\/p>\n And it\u2019s about to get Loud.<\/p>\n Because they are early. It\u2019s all early.<\/p>\n Early and the room can\u2019t hear them, the room can\u2019t see.<\/p>\n Hear under the music, feel under the bassline that shakes their heartbeat. Energy I can usually plug into, charge off of, but not this time, not this night.<\/p>\n Because they are early.<\/p>\n And you can\u2019t hear them.<\/p>\n But I can hear them.<\/p>\n The pressure to either side of my ears, whispered conversations beyond edge of hearing, shouted arguments so loud they shatter my eardrums, but so far distant that no one else can hear them. Muffled by a layer that can\u2019t be seen.<\/p>\n And you\u2019re all looking at me like I\u2019m crazy. Wondering why I can\u2019t relax, why I jump at shadows and cringe at whispers. I am not the only one, and I\u2019m not crazy.<\/p>\n Come out, come play, come visit. Your mother won\u2019t even know you\u2019re gone. We promise to have you back for supper, just don\u2019t ask us when.<\/em><\/p>\n Come play<\/em><\/p>\n Trust us, don\u2019t trust what you see. Don\u2019t trust what the rest say. Trust us. We won\u2019t hurt you. You can hear us, we know you can hear us.<\/em><\/p>\n Shadows overlaying faces, changing expressions, overlying gestures, bending time. Are you sure you see what you think you see?<\/p>\n You\u2019re still looking at me like I\u2019m crazy. That\u2019s fine. I\u2019m used to it. But the time is coming. As you buy your bucktooth pumpkins and spiced lattes, and your discounted candy corn. Preparing to send your children out into the twilight trusting that they will return. As you take to dance floors that shake under your feet and reliagn your heartbeat.<\/p>\n Pay not attention to me, or to any of us who prefer to hide in the corner, behind our walls. Who keep our cabin doors carefully shut, who wear jewellery you don\u2019t understand and answer questions with questions.<\/p>\n We\u2019re not crazy.<\/p>\n They\u2019re just early.
