Why is it that every time we drop anchor in Vietnam it\u2019s misty?\u00a0 Possibly the same reason I always wake with aches and pains I didn\u2019t have the night before, and why I\u2019m slightly dazed and distracted all day long. I don\u2019t like Vietnam, no matter how fascinating it is, and no matter that I\u2019ve never actually made it past the dockside market.<\/p>\n
From the window of my office I can see the cable cars running sedately from shore to shore, finishing under a huge Hollywood style sign reading \u201cVINPEARL\u201d a quick glance at the travel guides reveals nothing about what \u2018Vinpearl\u2019 may or may not be, so it remains just a huge sign towering over the port. Some kind or resort or industrial base or some such no doubt. Whatever it is, its big enough to have a sign that dominates the misty hillside.<\/p>\n
I have had a few guests who don\u2019t understand why I won\u2019t set foot in Vietnam, and at least one guest who agrees with me. At least one who won\u2019t get off the ship here, no matter how many sea days are in between. There\u2019s something about this place that doesn\u2019t feel right, and perhaps I\u2019m being harsh, perhaps it\u2019s in my imagination, perhaps the land has had more than enough time to recover, to soak up the blood and discharge the negativity…but in my experience, land doesn\u2019t forget for a very long time.<\/p>\n
