Regarding Dragons – Corsica – [04/14/2012]

The thing about dragons…

The thing about dragons is that we’re often under the confused delusion that we have to face them alone. We’re raised with this in some ways, no matter how loving our family is, no matter how supportive; some part of us always believes that we face our biggest fears alone. And if you let them, those dragons can get very fierce and very powerful indeed, and still we stand there, sword raised, determined not to ask for help, ashamed to even tell those close to us what it is we’re afraid of. For fear they’d run, or not understand, or worse – laugh. Call us crazy, call us delusional…call us cowardly.

But the truth? The real truth is that you never face your dragons alone. If you let yourself see it, you realize that you’re marching up to the battle with an army at your back.

Those of you who know me well, know that there are many many reasons why I’ve always been terrified of the transatlantic crossing. And not just because of the amount of work involved for the crew in those final six days. The reasons are deep running and personal, and there’s no real need to go into them, so I won’t. Let’s just say I was quite accustomed to holing up in my cabin for the whole voyage when I wasn’t working, doing anything and everything to keep myself from thinking about what where we were.

This time…is different. Will be different. Because this time, for once, I’m not scared. I am, after all, a water childe, perhaps its about time I got back to letting the sea do its job for me…

Life can turn around on you all at once, and what has terrified you your whole life, can begin to look like an opportunity instead. Sometimes it just takes the right moment, and the right (very patient), friend – to open your eyes to the army at your back…

Forward march…;)
