So you know that outfit I wore to your birthday party?
I LOVE that outfit…that outfit was genius
Yeah…served me faithfully for a long time that one has, I never travel without it
In a wardrobe that contains no less than three saris, five full length formals and countless ‘after-five’ cocktail dresses…the most reliable outfit I own continues to be a black skirt and a crushed black velvet top that I purchased for a cast party when I was 18 years old.
‘The Blacks’, as I have always referred to them, are the most versatile outfit in my wardrobe. Over the years the top half has changed, while the skirt has remained the same. But the general feel of the outfit has remained the same. It has served in every capacity from cast party (which is what it was original purchased for) to being paired with ballet flats and worn as a uniform when I tended bar in England. One version of it even served as a costume when I was an extra in The Seven Deadly Sins mini-series. Most recently it served as ‘The Hotel California’ costume for a friend’s birthday party (‘I could be heaven or I could be hell’ er…it was a themed party). That outfit has never, once, let me down.
While I wouldn’t wear them to a job interview or an audition (I do have other suitable outfits at hand for that, including the requisite ‘li’l black dress’ that I can reach for in a heartbeat, which is suitable for both a seated interview and an impromptu swing dance demonstration and has served in both capacities several times) I would never dream of giving them up. I update them once in a while yes, but get rid of them? Never. Not in a million years.
If Hollywood were to call me tomorrow that would be the outfit I reached for.
Second to that? Hmmmm…if the man of my dreams were to call me to something very fancy and I had to be ready in an hour – that would be the Lady in Red special. Known by many names since I purchased it several years ago (“The whiplash dress” “the hunting dress” “Ms Scarlet” etc etc) it will actually fold up and fit in my purse.
