There are times when my job is very difficult, since I came off the world cruise I became the only librarian on board, which means I now work extremely long days and extremely hard hours. But then, there are moments that make all those hours worth it.
Like tonight.
Tonight we held a dance on the aft deck, with the music echoing over the waves and the baseline reverberating off the polished wood of the decks. There may as well have been no one around but us in the whole world…having just transited the greatness that is the Panama Canal, now on our way to Costa Rica. The DJ ran everything from the typical (I Will Survive, YMCA) to the sappy (Unforgettable) to the bizarre (The Chicken Dance??? The Hokey Pokey??) and all the while keeping us updated on the inevitable hockey game playing back home (GO CANUCKS) – er, I should mention this cruise is three quarters Canadian.
By the end of the night there were few left by the die-hards, and the crew. And we kicked off our shoes and dandled our feet in the warm water of the aft deck pool, and danced barefoot on the deck.
I may have had a cosmopolitan, but you don’t need liquor to get drunk on a night like this.
There may be times when my job is hell on water, but there are times….times when it is heaven on earth.
“I can’t abide happy people” Would you like a gooseberry tart? Just to fill the void?
