A_Real_StopperYou know if I end up being hit by a car it’s so going to be your fault!

Why my fault?

Because you’re the one who keeps running across the street without a crosswalk!

You are SO *Canadian*

Hmph

This is a rather typical conversation when a small town Canadian girl ends up in a huge city like Boston, completely in the hands of a best friend who is utterly not afraid to channel his non-Canadian upbringing. I mean me? I’ll wait in the rain on an empty street for the walk signal, but you just can’t get away with that in a place like Boston! So there was a fair bit of linking hands and bolting across the street today.

As usual, we were working on a compressed time frame, I didn’t get off gangway degree duty until 8:45, which meant we couldn’t get off the ship until after 9, Amras had to play at 12:30 and I had to start my first desk shift of the day at 1pm. AND it’s embark day, with all the controlled insanity that that entails. So, Boston in 3 hours…HA! Can’t be done, but at least a tiny portion of it can be. Making a brief pass by the site of one of the most famous events in Boston history was of course a necessity:

No brew was made as strong and quaffed
As that night in Boston Harbour!

And of course there’s a museum right nearby. Which we didn’t go to today (we just didn’t have time), but the first sight of it had me stopping short and leaning over the railing of the bridge..

Oooh….who’s that

oh yeah, they have tours of her too…

Trust me to find the first Tall Ship in sight the second I get off the ship. At which point I reached out and eagerly tugged on my brother’s sleeve.

You wanna go?

Yeah yeah

Figured

But only so much time in the day, so that particular obsession has to wait until next week.

Since I’d skipped breakfast and my tummy was growly, a twenty minute walk further on brought us through Quincy Market (reminded me so much of Pike Place back home! Except minus the fish), and eventually to the Cheers bar, which – me being me – put the theme song from the old TV show into my head for the whole rest of the day. But I will say the eggs benedict was pretty much worth it!

Of course, there’s always the weird switch when you head back to the ship after a day out. Slipping from play mode into work mode is a subtle thing, but it is a necessary change…otherwise there are a fair lot of us who would stay in play mode all the time (hey, it’s definitely a possibility out here)

But, I still stick by what I said before…I think I’m gonna like it here

  1. Making your way in the world today takes everything you’ve got
Taking a break from all your worries, sure would help a lot
Wouldn’t you like to get away?

All those night when you’ve got no lights, the check is in the mail
And your little angel hung the cat up by it’s tail
And your third fiancee didn’t show

Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name
And they’re always glad you came
You wanna be where you can see our troubles are all the same
You wanna be where everybody knows your name

Roll out of bed, Mr. Coffee’s dead, the morning’s looking bright
And your shrink ran off to Europe and didn’t even write
And your husband wants to be a girl

Be glad, there’s one place in the world
Where everybody knows your name and they’re always glad you came
You want to go where people know, people are all the same
You want to go where everybody knows your name

Where everybody knows your name and they’re always glad you came
Where everybody knows your name and they’re always glad you came
Where everybody knows your name and they’re always glad you came
