My God…I’m a Country Girl -[08/02/2011]

This is the part o the blog where I make a confession, which might – quite possibly – cause my father to disown me (‘m sorry dad, I never meant to break your heart).

I begin by saying this; It’s all Z’s fault. All of it.

Well, maybe not all of it – I think this might actually have started during the World Cruise, when – because I was event staff – I had to take part in the line dancing classes that we ran in the crow’s nest every other night. Somewhere in the laughing, teaching and singing along to words we didn’t know – I discovered that lo and behold I was actually having a good time.

For most of my life though, I’ve hated country music. Hated it. With the sole exception of a few country pop tunes that were far more pop than they were country and so I allowed myself to like them as a guilty pleasure and the occasional karaoke indulgence and Johnny Cash – because Johnny Cash is in a class by himself and that’s just the way it is. But actual blue-grass 3-chord-only country? No way, never, never ever, not on your life – not in a million years.

Um…

Maybe if I say it faster it won’t be as painful? Like taking off a band-aid?

Looks at the floor, kicks at the dirt, and speaks very fast

The thing is, when you work in an area of the ship that features a solo guitarist every evening and when that solo guitarist’s specialty is blue grass country, you learn to either tolerate the style or you go home with a headache every night.. I’m a musician’s daughter, I was trained – blood and bone trained – to appreciate music, and to never ever ignore another musician. ‘Professionals never ignore other professionals’  – so try as I might, I couldn’t maintain my carefully bred dislike for long…

The truth is this; I hated country music because of the stereotype of it. Because all I really knew was bad country music…

Let that be a lesson to you…stereotypes can be wrong. For every country tune that runs along the line of ‘my best friend slept with my wife then took my dog and shot my horse’ etc etc…there’s one out there like The River (and if you haven’t listened to it…do)…or (prepares for the backlash) Thank God I’m a Country Boy…which I’m almost ashamed to say I’ve gotten totally addicted to…

I am however…slightly nervous about the effect this revelation might have on my dad….

Ya lost a couple points for liking Garth Brooks, but that’s overruled by your admittance that Johnny Cash is in a class all his own. 😉
