Shrouded – Nha Trang, Vietnam – [03/14/2012]

Why is it that every time we drop anchor in Vietnam it’s misty?  Possibly the same reason I always wake with aches and pains I didn’t have the night before, and why I’m slightly dazed and distracted all day long. I don’t like Vietnam, no matter how fascinating it is, and no matter that I’ve never actually made it past the dockside market.

From the window of my office I can see the cable cars running sedately from shore to shore, finishing under a huge Hollywood style sign reading “VINPEARL” a quick glance at the travel guides reveals nothing about what ‘Vinpearl’ may or may not be, so it remains just a huge sign towering over the port. Some kind or resort or industrial base or some such no doubt. Whatever it is, its big enough to have a sign that dominates the misty hillside.

I have had a few guests who don’t understand why I won’t set foot in Vietnam, and at least one guest who agrees with me. At least one who won’t get off the ship here, no matter how many sea days are in between. There’s something about this place that doesn’t feel right, and perhaps I’m being harsh, perhaps it’s in my imagination, perhaps the land has had more than enough time to recover, to soak up the blood and discharge the negativity…but in my experience, land doesn’t forget for a very long time.

This would be why I chose to submit myself to IPM today.
