Flashbacks – At Sea – [03/01/2013]

Carmen-sandiegoWhen I was a kid – around 10 or 12 – I wanted nothing more than to be on Where in the World Is Carmen San Diego. My dreams of this were of course dashed by the simple fact that all the kids who participated on the show were American, so being Canadian that wasn’t precisely going to happen. But like so many others my age, I knew all the words to the theme song, and I knew all the cue lines that were repeated every week. So when Rockapella actually performed last night and stood on stage at the end of the show and called out:

There’s just one more thing we need you to do and you know what it is!

And pointed out to the audience, it’s no real surprise that the long-thought-forgotten cue line bubbled up in my memory. So it was my voice and one other that yelled back:

HIT IT ROCKAPELLA!!

Which surprised the heck out of them actually

Whoa, someone out there actually knows what it is…

They then went on to explain to the rest of the audience precisely what the heck was going on, so the next time they gave the cue, everyone did the call-back.

They’re really nice guys actually, surprisingly down to earth and easy to talk to. At least one of them is only a little older than me, having joined the group only a few years ago. We were chatting about how weird it is to think that it was so long ago we were sitting cross legged in front of our TV sets trying to guess whether or not Carmen was in Peru or Pennsylvania. Time flies, whether you’re having fun or not…
