It’s All So Magical – Montreal, Quebec – [08/09/2014]

Mi_vida_en_el_bosque_by_ELENADUDINASeven day runs can get repetitive; they can fall into a routine that simply goes day in and day out without much real care for where you are. If it’s Tuesday this must be Quebec etc etc.

Embark day goes with its usual chaotic pace, and by the time you finish the opening night show you’re pretty much ready to call it a day; but once in a very great while, something happens to jar you out of that routine and make you realize just how lucky a life you really lead. Last night we were all filing off stage having done all our smiles and introductions, the cast was bustling around us in and out of the dressing rooms, false eyelashes being removed, gear being backed up, and suddenly ‘Gale comes running back in from beyond the stage door.

Guys! Guysguysguys! FIREWORKS OUTSIDE!!!

And we all look at each other, blink, drop whatever we’re doing, and scurry out onto the bow, which happened to be open because it was an absolutely, beautiful clear night…and sure enough, the stars were exploding over the city skyline.

Far enough away from the coast that I couldn’t smell the gunpowder, but close enough that the sound still rattled my ribs, I stood alongside the rest of the entertainment department and just stared.

Think that’s the finale?

Nah, finale’ll have way more shells than that.

Hey everyone! It’s V’s birthday! Who arranged the surprise?

Does anyone actually know what the occasion is?

Does anyone care???

We never did figure it out, but the show went on forever. Because we had to make the tide under the bridge at a very specific hour, the Captain couldn’t stop, so we swung left and carried on, leaning on the horn to avoid the dozens of water bugs that were sitting staring with us. Despite the fact that it had threatened rain earlier, the sky remained perfectly clear and the night was so warm that even the dancers – who were still half in costume – didn’t have to throw on a jacket. There was just enough breeze to ruffle your hair. It was the kind of night, the kind of moment, where the only thing that would make it more perfect would be someone you cared about coming up behind you and wrapping their arms around your waist and just saying…nothing.

There are days when I hate my job, there are weeks when the hours are hard and the days are long, and you simply cannot wait for the contract to be over…

And then there are the nights that remind me why it is I do this in the first place….

Spotlight – Halifax, Nova Scotia – [08/05/2014]

dreaming_by_juli_snowwhite-d2oz20vWe were concerned about the whole Sing with the ‘Cats thing this cruise, this has been a dead crowd – and I nearly mean that literally as it’s been something like trying to play a show to zombies. We just hadn’t been able to get a rise out of them – not even for bingo, just…nothing. It’s not exactly easy to establish the energy loop with a crowd that is determinedly giving you nothing back.

So, when I was putting together the new song selection books for the event all that was going through my head was the story my Dad used to tell me, about working a New Year’s Eve when only 10 people showed up to the gig – but they’d paid several hundred dollars a ticket. Dad always told me he’d never worked so hard as he did that night, because playing to a small crowd is 100% harder than playing to a big one. Since with the whole live karaoke thing I’m already the link between the audience and the band (“you’re not sure you know the words? No worries hun, this band totally has your back and ‘Gale will be right there in your ear if you get lost, you’ve totally got this”) – when no one is “playing” …it’s all of our jobs to get people up.

But…as it turns out, we were wrong.

They ran a music trivia session before the live event, so there was already a crowd up there, all we had to do was catch them – which was brilliant. And, since a couple of hours working over a hot word program ( 😉 ) had allowed me to hand over the new – properly formatted, much more durable, and in colour – song selection books (hey, no band of mine is going to go out there with anything that’s not professional looking!) we were actually able to have something decent looking to hand around. Four soft cover lists that could float around the room and one hardcover master folder that stayed next to me…

Yes, I am a nerd, this is utterly part of my charm. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

They swamped us in the first five minutes. Almost to the point where Amras couldn’t read my handwriting because I had to write so quickly to get the names down. Thing is, I have to take a 15 minute break every week because I have to come down to the library and do the weekly general cleaning – so when we hit 9:55 (the event goes till 11:00), I caught Amras’ eye from the corner of the bandstand and gestured to an invisible watch

I gotta go luv, I’ll be back in ten…keep an eye on the master book, do not let it leave this spot

Yes, we talk from bandstand to sidelines. We always have. Thing is, we tend to do it mostly without actually saying anything, which is handy. It’s a skill I think I’ve inherited from Mum, because I used to watch her have similar “conversations” with my Father when he was on stage.

Anyway, when I came back up from general cleaning, the rush had slowed down, which meant they needed filler, which meant I got my reward for being the good little roadie.

Hey ‘Gale, pull up 178 for Shaughnessy…

You got it…hey ladies and gentleman, we’re out of sign-ups…everyone give me an “awwwwwww” (pause, reaction, pick-up), but in the meantime, I have the perfect idea – who wants to hear our librarian sing? You know she sits behind that desk all day but…

And so my reputation as the quiet little librarian is blown for another cruise.

Not that I’m, y’know, terribly unhappy about that…

Sometimes Ya Have To Be – Bar Harbor, Maine – [08/02/2014]

SAILOR_BEWARE2_1_Tendering, is just…never the most fun operation in the world. Thankfully for this particular run we only have to tender once a week to Bar Harbor, and usually it runs as smooth as clockwork…in fact, I’m seldom even involved.

However, just my luck – the day that my coworker asks me to cover for her because she’s going on a bike riding tour? Is the day the tendering operation just goes downhill on rails. I don’t know what precisely caused the delay – supervisor hasn’t filled me in yet, but we had people stuck in that show room for what felt like hours, and of course you keep people confined long enough the natives start to get restless, and it doesn’t matter that it’s not your fault that things aren’t running as quickly as they should be or that you can’t give an estimate as to when they’ll be back on track – all that matters is that they want someone to blame, and hey, you’re there!

Oi vay, what a way to spend a morning!

At one point, I left my partner at the table so that I could run down to the gangway and pick up the tickets that had already been collected (makes for easier sorting later in the morning and ultimately saves us some time), and the cruise director comes up behind me, gives me a big hug and says

Shaughnessy, sweetheart, I am SO sorry you have to deal with all this madness!

Make it stooooop!

I know, I know…we’re tryin’

I have a cool boss.

When I got back to the show room after the second ticket run it was blessedly empty. I just flung my arms out and spun around in the middle of the dance floor like a child

Empteeeeeeeee!!!!! Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!!!

Thing is, this left very little time for crew shore leave as this port is a short one when we’re going in this direction – it’s a tidal thing I think. But I owed Amras lunch, so it never occurred to me not to head over. There’s a really funky little restaurant in Bar Harbour that has the feel of a 50s diner, and surprisingly reasonable prices (hey, I’m not exactly flush right now!), and they serve some exceptionally yummy cocktails – which normally I would not indulge in with lunch, but it had been one heck of a morning.

Also, probably our last lunch out for a while, since it’s a tight contract budget wise but hey…every so often, you really do earn the right to treat yourself.

Careful the Things You Say – Bar Harbor, Maine – [08-03-2014]

must-see-black-and-white-historic-moments-11Children? Oh no, children and I don’t …get on. ~ Bedknobs and Broomsticks

I am by nature, a solitary creature. I have a very close knit Pack of very dear friends, and a slightly wider circle of close acquaintances that I tend to keep in touch with mostly through my words. I’m somewhat like an oyster, I don’t like being intruded upon…

And when it comes to my work, I’m very protective and almost fiercely independent. I can’t stand anyone staring over my shoulder, which is why my current supervisor and I get along so well, he’s very hands off and pretty much only monitors from a distance.

In other words, I’m a very private woman, and I much prefer to simply remain to my own devices. I have a routine, and if I need or want help, I ask for it (which is why Amras has gotten a few phone calls on the last day of the cruise asking for help reshelving, even I can’t handle everything!)

So, all in all, the arrival of Mini-Me on the scene put my hackles up at the same time as it confused the heck out of me. I sum up as best I can: Mini-Me, is – nearly literally – a Mini-Me. She even has the same name. She’s 11. The daughter of one of the medical staff on board, she’s a sweet kid, she really is – she’s smart, and well, she’s a lot like I was when I was a kid. I know well what it’s like to be the child thrown into an adult world, an old soul who just isn’t “gotten” by kids your own age, so you get along better with the adults than you ever would with the kids. She’s bored to tears by our kids program because she’s been a crew kid for so long and so she literally has nothing to do. I want to support her I do…because I’ve been her…

But…

Oyster remember?

I can’t get away from her! She’s …always there. Always right at my shoulder, and sometimes I can give her work to do and that’s great, but most times I don’t like sharing my work, and I don’t actually have anything to give her, and she’s not a reader so I can’t just give her a book and tell her to entertain herself…so she just sits…and stares…and reads everything I’m writing over my shoulder!

It’s making me jumpy!

*sigh*…so, I need to figure out how to be a cool big sister for two weeks…

This…shall be interesting….

One Block North to Macey’s – Boston, USA – [08/02/2014]

BEAUTIFUL_LADY_1966_1_I studied all the pictures in magazines and books
I memorized the subway map too
It’s one block north to Macey’s and two to Brother’s Brookes ~ Thoroughly Modern Millie

It was, as usual, rainy – well, misty. I swear this run gets more water than Alaska. And I didn’t think that that was possible! And of course, neither of us had brought an umbrella, as we hadn’t actually intended to stay out this morning – crew shore leave was majorly delayed because of some problems that happened on a way higher stripe level than me, so we’d just kind of planned to go out to an electronics store so that Amras could pick up the cables he needed for his bass. But the store we needed was much closer than we expected, which left us with a huge chunk of time and neither of us felt remotely like going back to the ship….so we just…started walking.

Where do you get clothes around here?
In Beverly Hills? Rodeo Drive baby… ~ pretty woman

Okay, so Boston is not Beverly Hills, it’s nowhere near Beverly Hills, but it does have it’s own version of Rodeo Drive.

As Amras and I hoofed it up Newburry street this morning I have never felt more like a poor country cousin. I mean really, this street has shops that I couldn’t even afford to breathe in, aaaaaaand a few that he had to pull me back from the doors of

Remind me that I’m broke big brother

You’re broke sis, you’re really really broke

Can we come back when I’m not?

Yes…

So on we went, past the Boston Commons and the Theatre District (where they are playing Mamma Mia next month and I will not be here, and this makes me sad) all the way up the street past Burberry, Chanel, Ugg, MAC, Victoria’s Secret, etc etc…I mean really, this place just…it feels like I should dress up in the best clothes I have and wander around pretending to be burning a hole in daddy’s credit card. On my best day I might be able to afford one “from the bottom up” outfit, but hey…a girl can dream.

I mean, this is just…I’d never even seen Brookes Brothers…except in movies.

Or Steinway, where the kid in me who took a couple of years of piano lessons just wanted to press palms and nose up against the glass and stare, because that’s only one of the most legendary musical instruments in the world

In his typical vein of knowing me far too well, a long ways down the street Amras just steers me right.

Thought I remembered right…

And there, hanging above my head, is a little tiny black and white sign reading “The Fairy Shop”. Hee! Dragons and mermaids and dream catchers and …I was so well behaved, I didn’t buy anything. Not even the Firefly merch that they had on display. This pretty much deserves a medal.

Especially since there was a dragon there that would have been just so perfect on so many levels…

Days like this, there is just never enough time. We kept spinning it out, five more minutes, five more minutes, one more slice of pizza…

But eventually time caught up with us – as it always does – and reality called, and reality meant a cab back to the ship. And no matter how great your week, the ship always gets its revenge on embark day, once he and I part ways at the gangway we don’t see each other again until dinner, or sometimes even until the I set foot on the stage for the introductory show. This is one of the reasons why neither of us is always that keen on returning to reality.

Do we have to?

‘Fraid so…

Hmph…

Totally….

So…here we go again, Montreal here we come…

In Explanation – Syndey, Nova Scotia – [07/30/2014

Laguna_de_noche_by_ELENADUDINAIt occurred to me this morning that I really have no idea how large my reading base is, I know a lot of you follow the links through from Facebook, most of you are family, all of you are friends – close or not, but I don’t know how many of you there are. Whatever the answer, there is something I at least need to attempt to explain, perhaps for my own sake as much as for your benefit.

I know that over the years I’ve been keeping these pages, it is often the case that my summer contracts are the most prolific writing-wise. The World Cruise leads to more exotic ports and more historical interest, but I write less, whereas my summer contracts are usually brimming over with coffee chatter, sunshine, the occasional glass of red wine, and a whole lot of music. Compared to the normal standard, I know I’ve been terribly well – quiet – this summer. There is a possibility that it might seem that I’m talking around something. ‘Tis true, I am. There are big things going on in my little ‘Pack’ right now, which – because the Pack is what it is – ripple out and impact my life. Someone very near and very dear to me is going through something highly difficult, and by the very nature of my ‘mamma wolf’ tendencies, that draws me in from the fringes. The wagons circle, so to speak. But the thing is, while it’s affecting me – it’s not mine to discuss, or to reveal or to talk about at all.

This has had the result of somewhat stemming my usual flow of words.

It’s not the easiest of things. Trimming out an entire situation and the resulting series of events leaves large gaps in everything – like the random holes that make up a child’s paper snowflake. The summer is no less beautiful for those gaps, but there are times when I feel they’re obvious.

So for those that have noticed – and many of you may have not – I do apologize. It’s not good, it’s not bad; it’s just the way things are just at the moment.

So there you go, I ask you all to be patient, because there’s really nothin’ I can do about…

Scarlet Whiplash – At Sea – [07/27/2014]

red_splash_by_elenadudina-d52hl7gEvery so often, you have a day that just requires you to bring out the arsenal. I normally wear my 50s style polka dots to the golden oldies night up in the lounge. It’s cute, it’s flirty and it goes with the theme. But this was just one of those days, the internet’s been down since early afternoon (and shows no signs as of yet of coming back), the bridge players were grumpy with me because I was caught up in the internet being down and therefore was a whole 4 minutes late refreshing their cards, and somehow it seems that everyone has already decided to return their books all at once despite the fact that this is only the third day of the cruise!

Therefore…dammit, I wanted to feel pretty!

As a result I looked up from my dessert over dinner and said to Amras;

By the way, I’m not wearing polka dots tonight

You’re not? What you wearing instead

Don’t know yet, haven’t decided, but not polka dots…actually I’m thinkin’ red

You’re thinking whiplash?

I am

God help us all…

The whiplash special, a solid length of fire-engine red satin with a scandalously low back and a beautifully flirty angled hemline, I have to wear it with a shawl because I’m shy about showing that much skin on a formal night…but it looks stunning. And amazingly enough it’s comfortable.

When I walked into the upstairs lounge I took the back way in, mostly thinking to avoid everyone – because to be honest, I’m still a little bit nervous about that dress, it’s beautiful, but it takes courage. It takes exactly the right attitude. As it turns out going through the front would have been more inconspicuous, because the Party Band hadn’t taken the stage yet, and I hear this whistle from behind me

Holy…is that my sister?!?

Hi Big Brother

Okay, great choice on the name for that dress…

It’s just not very often you can catch even your family by surprise….

*grin*

Sleepy Starts – At Sea – [07/28/2014]

Al Moore. Pin-Up Girls. DO h. Pin-Up Girls-018Pretty much everyone who knows me knows that I’m so not a morning person. At least not usually. When I’m stressed I need sleep, and I can be a bear if I’ve not had my 8 hours, I am fully aware of this fact.

But the actual truth is that I quite like mornings, if I can ever get myself up in time to enjoy them (see it’s the getting started that’s the hard part). Early mornings in the office are often the most pleasant time of day, particularly when we had our weekly hour forward jump the night before so everyone is still asleep and adjusting to the time change. At that point it’s usually just me and the barista (who is really sweet this contract, I think she’s new), and a near empty room. It gives me a chance to actually get some reshelving done before the internet queries start pouring in just after nine, and it’s just so wonderfully beautifully quiet.

I even managed to finish the book I have been attempting to read for the last week, Lost Lake by Sarah Addison Allen. Until now every time I picked it up to read a page, suddenly a stream of people would come up with questions. I was starting to think the book was jinxed! But I managed to finish it this morning, and it ended the way I hoped it would, so that was a nice laid back start to my day.

I’m still making slow (very slow) but steady progress on my inventory. Even if I can just get things looking organized it will be a start. But this collection has been only partially monitored for so long it’s a difficult go of it. If I can finish even half of it before we head over to the more jam-packed European run in the fall I’ll be happy.

Isn’t A Lovely Day To Get Caught in the Rain – Quebec, Canada – [07/27/2014]

61e0bac4f65e1606742de1d9acfb0e50-d735skrAs I’ve said before, sometimes I think it doesn’t know how to do anything but rain in Quebec. There are some days where the weather just has you wanting to stay in and be lazy, to just get back in your pjs, curl up, order room service, and watch something mindless (Amras wants to rewatch the Craft for example), but both my Big Brother and I wound up waking up earlier than expected (well, I was awake at the same time I always am, because my opening shift never changes, he was awake earlier than anticipated), so we figured that a bit of fresh air would do us some good, even if it did come with a little bit of liquid sunshine. Besides, at that point the rain was only drizzling, and after all, neither of us have green skin.

That said, when we were sitting at a corner café people watching and munching on bagels, the sky opened up and poured. So we ended up sprinting two blocks to the nearest drug store to buy umbrellas. Not that there was a wide selection, but while I was standing in the hair care aisle trying to pick a shampoo (my good stuff mysteriously disappeared, I blame the ghosts, because I know I didn’t use it all), Amras suddenly taps me on the shoulder. And he’s got that grin on his face that says he’s found something that’s going to make me either laugh or roll my eyes or both.

Found you the ultimate ‘you’ umbrella

And he holds out the single child-sized umbrella with the Tinker Bell handle. Yes I glared at him, and yes I walked out of the store with it.

My nerdiness is so part of my charm.

Besides, it meant I got to tease him for having a boring plain black umbrella for the rest of the day.

And naturally the moment we got the umbrellas the rain slowed, and then stopped altogether. Typical.

All in all though, it was a nice day. One of those lazy days that everyone needs once in a while, where you do nothing except have long conversations over lunch, and drag each other into shops that contain everything you know you could ever want but can never afford.

Misty – Quebec City, Quebec – [07/27/2014]

caught_in_the_draft_1_I think Quebec doesn’t know how to do anything but rain. It’s rained two out of the three times we were here. A drizzly, dreary kind of rain that makes you do nothing more than want to stay inside and just do nothing, but I’m just not one for staying inside these days.

That said, we were in Quebec just day before yesterday, that’s the weird thing about these turn around runs – we bounce back and forth between Montreal and Boston and so we double up on ports at either end. Last time we were here though it was actually miraculously sunny – and Amras and I spent a really nice afternoon wandering through the old battlefield on what was once the Plains of Abraham. These days it looks more like a park – a beautiful park at that – but if you just scratch the surface, I swear you can still hear the shots being fired. Battlefields never really let go of their history, the blood is soaked too thickly into the soil.

We had planned to take the tour of the fortress itself, which is still an active military base, but unfortunately we’re both pretty strapped money wise right now so the price – while reasonable – was above our heads.

Maybe next month…which is also what I’m saying about the Greek Mythology exhibition that’s currently housed at the main museum in town; lots of things are waiting until my next paycheque drops!

So today will likely be spent wandering through the rain-slicked streets, most likely in search of food. There’s a section of Quebec City that looks remarkably like Europe, so we’ve been known to simply wander through there. Last time the sun got to me, my blood sugar took a drop that made me dizzy and I had to fumble for my wallet to get ice cream and water before I simply melted into a puddle 😛 Of course, I could say that was just an excuse to eat really good ice cream 😉

Yeah, it’s one of those contracts…and that’s a good thing. I’ve been overdue for another one of the good ones.
